Road Conditions

Currently (Oct 2000) the road conditions in the Cape York area are badly corrugated. The Wenlock River at Stone crossing is closed, the Pascoe river crossing on the Frenchmans track is not officially closed but be WARNED it is so rough that vehicles have come to grief because of two factors: deep water (over bonnet of the larger 4WDs) and VERY rough rocky bottom. CROSS AT YOUR OWN PERIL.

Stories out of Weipa caravan park tell of nearly all who returned from the top were sporting damage of some description, broken shockers, split fuel tanks, fuel tanks falling off, diff & transmission problems, so if you are going to the "TOP" check your vehicle carefully.

To reach the TOP is not a 4WD challenge, but a challenge to keep your vehicle in one piece on badly corrugated roads.

The road from Weipa south has some bad patches in places, and there are extensive road works in various places, travel with caution is advised.
